Magic And Your Wardrobe Whatever persona you have chosen to portray in your magic tricks performance, your wardrobe needs to reflect that type personality or the complete opposite. There are no happy mediums. If you choose to do a complete opposite costume portrayal of your onstage persona, you might choose to wear pieces of mismatched clothing while speaking in a very cultured voice, for example. There are no hard and fast rules about the correct wardrobe for a performing magician. RAY GOULETS MINI MUSEUM OF MAGIC in Watertown, Massachusetts has a lot of costumes worn by famous magicians. There is the original Oriental Robe and accessories worn by Marco the Magi, a complete stage wardrobe worn by Celeste Evans, a very fine manipulator, a costume worn by Bess Houdini and many more. If you “into” magic, it would certainly be worth your time to visit the museum. When I hear “magician” and “wardrobe” in the same sentence, two pictures come to mind. The first is a tall man with a wand wearing a tuxedo and a top hat (with secret pockets). The second is Merlin, his scepter held high, in his pointy hat and swirling robes (all the more places to hide things, my dear). But todays magicians do not wear either of those things or even any modern versions of them. Todays magicians each seem to have their own style and pretty much stick to it with every performance. Magicians assistants need to be dressed in as distracting manner as possible. It is certainly important that the clothing worn to do a magic trick performance be comfortable especially the shoes. Its easier to move about and misdirect an audiences attention if you are comfortable. The clothing worn should afford the hiding places needed (if any) to perform the magic tricks in the act.
