Overcoming Fear and Phobias

It comes as a no surprise that even the most athletic, bravest, and the most brilliant people out there have something to fear. It can be a most common situation, from a fear of heights, spiders or even death to the most mundane, such as a fear of dolls, people or even funerals. These are your fears. Sometimes called phobias, fears are usually embedded in the back of one's mind and because of a particular event or situation in one's life, this fear grew and became threatening.

But with this fear comes a solution, so rare that it strikes the boundaries of one's inner self. It's something to study, something to learn, something that can be applied to everyday life.

So how can we overcome these fears?

There are several steps in trying to overcome fear.

First is to recognize and identify what fear is and its origin. Did you lose a loved one at such as early age that you fear death? Did you almost drown while swimming at the beach that you fear the sea? Did a spider bite you that you became afraid of them? Fear is actually a response to the uncertainty of emotions that originate from anticipation, guilt and insecurity. So, to start overcoming these fears, you need to be able to answer these questions first.

Second is to talk to someone about these fears, and let them help you. By being with people who understand you and in no way afraid of what you're afraid of, they can easily help you talk about what's bugging you and how to overcome it. Recommended are friends but if the fear is slowly eating you inside and out that you can't live your life anymore, it's better to deal with a professional.

Third is very simple - face your greatest fear. Attend a funeral if you are afraid of death. Climb a ladder if you are afraid of heights. Be near a snake pool if you are afraid of snakes. But just be careful. It is best suited that you are with friends if you need to overcome these fears. That way, you can have a support group just in case something goes awry.

Overcoming fear and phobias are not that easy. Aside from these practical tips on how to overcome what you fear, you also need determination, perseverance and prayer. And of course, the will to survive what you fear.

I agree it’s good to face your fears; I also think it’s a good idea to do that in a controlled and measured way through progressive conditioning and not “sink or swim”.

Yeah because fears are developed at an very early age which remains throughout our lives and we don’t really feel the courage to face them. You’re right to find the cause of that fear. Reading this post, I was trying to find out causes for my phobias and I’ve to some extent found it as well. Meditation may help as well, because our mind needs to be re-wired.
