According to Sir John Harvey Jones, "people should first decide to undergo change. Then they should be encouraged not to be afraid of change. Finally, they must be able to see where the change is leading them."
Aren't these such powerful words from a very low-key personality ever known to step foot on this world?
This saying applies as well to life coaches who are at the forefront of encouraging people to make changes in their lives in order to have their dreams within their grasp.
Do you want to know how to go about this? Read on.
1. Understand the causes of change. Change is usually brought about by internal and external factors in a person's life. Many of these changes are unpredictable, and whatever the causes or circumstances, invariably involve other people. The way in which people react to change will depend on how the change is presented to them and how they perceive it will affect them.
In order to promote cooperation with the client, the life coach should present the benefits of the change that the client will go through in a very appealing way.
2. Understand the resistance to change. People seldom accept change without complaint or comments, even when it is beneficial. Resistance is natural; and before the client can overcome it, he needs to consider the reasons behind the irresistible force. One possible reason is force of habit. If a client is too comfortable working in a familiar condition, he just wants to maintain it. Another is conformity. Most individuals like to conform to the accepted ways of society. Any other force, which threatens to disturb the status quo, is viewed with distrust. The third is misunderstanding. A person may not fully understand what the change will mean, and believe he could possibly lose out as a result. This could be due to poor two-way communication between the life coach and student.
3. Overcoming resistance. Although clients are initially resistant to change, it is definitely better than apathy. It is easier to change the former than the latter. The points to remember when trying to overcome resistance should include sharing of information and provision of knowledge, an open communication to provide adequate opportunity for questions and clarifications, and high awareness on the part of the client about the impending changes in his life. This would surely help you to become better equipped to coach others.
