Active Anger - Symptoms and Treatments

Unlike its sibling passive anger, active anger is quite easy to diagnose, and in some ways, more easily treatable. The effects of an active anger problem are not well tolerated in most civilized societies. Unlike people with subtle passive anger problems, those with active anger management issues make it impossible for them to be ignored.

There are many different manifestations of an active anger management problem. However, they are all fairly easy to see even by someone not intimately familiar with the individual who has the problem.
The most easily diagnosed symptoms, and possibly the most unsettling, include giving threats, bullying others, and showing signs of destructive behavior.

Individuals use threats to get what they want, or just to assert dominance. Threats do not necessarily need to have a reason to exist, but can be used simply as a way of intimidating another person into submission for the pure joy of the person who has anger management problems.

Threats do not necessarily need to be verbal or overtly physical. For instance, tailgating or the excessive slamming of doors can be seen as threatening to some people. On the other hand, wearing clothing that showcases or glorifies symbology that typically references hatred can be seen as passive threatening behavior. Bullying is very easy to recognize and usually takes two different forms, physical and mental.

Mental bullying involves using emotional manipulation to get what you want out of another person, whereas physical bullying involves making physical threats or carrying out violent actions against another person. Much like bullying, destructive behavior is also easy to recognize and involves harming or destroying something, be it small animals, physical objects, or even relationships.

Less obvious yet still fairly clear signs of active anger management problems include behavioral issues such as selfishness, grandiosity, poor sportsmanship, or constantly shifting the blame. Because none of these symptoms have overt physical characteristics, it is possible that they can be overlooked. Since they are considered to be without taste in many segments of society, they are still easily observed and categorized.

The one underlying issue behind all forms of active anger management problems is the need to assert one's self in a physical or mental way to show dominance over another person. Emotions do not exist in a vacuum, and there is always an underlying issue causing people to act out in such a manner.

Treatment of active anger management problems involves getting patients to look outside of the box and evaluate their behavior from a third person perspective in hopes that it sheds some light on their destructive patterns.

This is not easy for individuals to see because most people with active anger management problems do not realize that what they are doing is unacceptable. One of the major roadblocks to treatment is getting people to realize that their behavior is unacceptable, as often times they will believe their actions are "manly" or acceptably assertive. Only through intensive therapy with a qualified professional can individuals with active anger management problems hope to rejoin society in a productive way.
